News & EventsUS National Medal of science laureate and world class educator Paul Ching-Wu Chu JOINS AURORA IMAGING TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY BOARD NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (May 29, 2007) - Aurora Imaging Technology, Inc., manufacturer of the Aurora® 1.5Tesla Dedicated Breast MRI System, today named Paul Ching-Wu Chu, one of the top scientists of the 20th and 21st centuries, its newest Advisory Board member. Dr. Chu is the current President of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, one of the fastest growing research universities of Asia, and T. L. L. Temple Chair of Science, Professor of Physics and Executive Director of the Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston. A distinguished and globally known scientist, in 1987, Dr. Chu and his team discovered stable superconductivity above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen, an epoch-making breakthrough which opened the door to subsequent developments of an entire field of high temperature superconductivity. For his scientific discoveries, Dr. Chu has won some of the highest awards in science, including the World Congress on Superconductivity’s Award for Excellence, the National Medal of Science of the US, the Bernd Matthias Prize, and the John Fritz Medal, which he shares with such great names as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Enrico Fermi. He also is a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Academia Sinica, as well as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Russian Academy of Engineering. “Superconductivity is the cornerstone of MRI technology,” said Olivia Ho Cheng, president and chief executive officer of Aurora. “Therefore it is a tremendous honor and pleasure to have Dr. Chu as a member of the Advisory Board, which already is a very august group of individuals. His profound scientific knowledge in material science in general, especially his deep knowledge in all forms of superconductivity, and his global connections in the research and business worlds will add immeasurably to Aurora!” “Despite his enormous success in scientific discoveries, Dr. Chu never ceases to be an educator and pursues the building of world class universities to be intellectual and economic engines, as he has so successfully done in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,” said Da Hsuan Feng, also an Advisory Board member of Aurora and a fellow physicist. “He also is deep down a scientist with profound concern for humanity. Therefore, a few months ago, when he was introduced to the Aurora system for breast cancer detection by Olivia, he quickly recognized the system’s enormous range of applications, and how it can be further enhanced via software and hardware advancements. I have no doubt that he will be critical in Aurora as it continues to develop into uncharted arenas!” “I am very pleased that I was able to find out what the Aurora system can do to mitigate one of the most frightening diseases confronting humanity, especially for the female gender,” said Dr. Chu. “Almost every day, I hear so-and-so dies from breast cancer. I am really honored that, through Aurora, there is a way I can contribute to the mitigation of this menace!”
