News & EventsFIRST AND ONLY DEDICATED BREAST MRI CENTER OPENS IN CALIFORNIA ORANGE, Calif., March 26, 2007 – Aurora Breast MRI of Orange County announced today that it is the first to offer a dedicated breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) service in California. Patients throughout Orange County and Southern California now have immediate access to the most technologically advanced breast imaging system for screening and early detection of breast cancer. Currently operating at the UC Irvine Manchester Pavilion at 200 South Manchester Ave. in Orange, Aurora Breast MRI of Orange County will relocate to its permanent location within the UC Irvine Medical Center campus in Orange later this year. Maureen Zehntner, interim CEO of University of California, Irvine Medical Center said, “We are very pleased to have Aurora’s technology available for our patients. With breast MRI complementing our other services, UC Irvine is at the forefront of the fight against breast cancer.” Unlike mammograms, which utilize X-rays, Aurora uses MRI technology to detect breast cancer. MRI is a non-invasive method which renders the inside image of the breast without exposing the patient to any radiation. More importantly, the Aurora Breast MRI System provides an entire three-dimensional composite model of the breast, enabling physicians to diagnose cancer earlier and more accurately. Aurora’s breast MRI technology detects tumors that are not typically identified by mammograms – especially those found in denser breasts of younger women or, in some cases, tumors, which develop in high-risk women or those with a strong family history of the disease. “State-of-the-art breast MRI is an extremely sensitive method for early breast cancer detection. Thus, screening high-risk women with both mammography and MRI will find more cancers than screening with mammography alone,” said Dr. Stephen Feig, radiologist and director of breast imaging at University of California, Irvine Medical Center. “Among women recently diagnosed with breast cancer, MRI is the best method to determine the extent of disease. It helps the surgeon, radiation oncologist and medical oncologist develop the best treatment plan for the individual patient. Breast MRI has many other clinical indications, such as evaluation of a palpable mass when mammography and ultrasound are negative, assessment of possible breast implant rupture, and assessment of response to breast cancer treatment.” Dr. Steven Chao, President of Aurora Breast MRI of Orange County, added, “We are thrilled to bring Aurora’s technology to the Southern California community. The Aurora Breast MRI System has been specifically engineered and tailored for breast imaging. We don’t use an aftermarket coil on a whole-body scanner. So, when we say dedicated breast MRI, we mean truly dedicated and specifically designed for women. Also, with our new SpiralRODEO™ technology, we are able to achieve image quality three times that of current industry standards. No other center in California can boast this capability.” Breast MRI is quickly becoming the standard of care across the nation, and most insurers cover screening costs for high-risk women. Patients should consult with their physicians to see if they qualify for high-risk screening, especially those with risk factors such as family history, genetic BRCA1 and BRCA2 carrier, past history of breast cancer, and/or dense breasts.
