University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences now offerS PATIENTS ACCESS TO THE AURORA DEDICATED BREAST MRI SYStem

Little Rock, Ark. (June 1, 2007) – The Breast Center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences/Arkansas Center Research Center (UAMS/ACRC Breast Center) today announced that patients in Central Arkansas have access to the most advanced technology in breast imaging with the recent addition of the Aurora® 1.5T Dedicated Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) System.  The Aurora System is the only FDA cleared dedicated breast MRI system which has been specifically designed for 3-D bilateral breast imaging.
Prior to the delivery of the Aurora System, patients were screened using a whole body MRI unit with an add-on breast coil located outside of the UAMS/ACRC Breast Center.  To meet the growing demand of both screening and diagnostic patients who were candidates for breast MRI, the Aurora System was the appropriate selection.  Since its installation, the Aurora System already has served more than 400 patients in Central Arkansas and its surrounding cities.

“We are thrilled to have the Aurora Breast MRI System which offers image quality that is far superior to any other breast imaging system I’ve ever used,” said Robert L. Fincher, M.D., medical director, UAMS/ACRC Breast Center. “We run a large center at UAMS/ACRC and when we sought to improve our facility, we wanted the best available imaging technology to offer our patients. There is no doubt that the Aurora System has improved patient care. Patients appreciate the ease of service our center provides, our improved diagnostic accuracy and the comfort of knowing we can meet all their breast health needs in a timely fashion, in a single facility.”

The addition of the Aurora System at UAMS/ACRC’s multimodality breast center has shown its benefits well beyond patient convenience. “Several cancer cases have been discovered on the Aurora System that were not visible on any other imaging modality,” continued Dr. Fincher. “The Aurora Dedicated Breast MRI completes our state-of-the art breast center.”
The Aurora System delivers industry-leading, ultra-thin 1mm slices for superior resolution and clarity.  “In addition to diagnostic use, breast MRI is one of the most promising technologies for breast cancer screening,” said Olivia Ho Cheng, president and CEO of Aurora Imaging Technology, Inc.  “There is a growing trend of more comprehensive breast centers selecting the dedicated breast MRI system for the exclusive use of breast imaging. Adding a truly dedicated and truly integrated breast MRI system into their practice differentiates them as a premier breast care center while offering their patients the best possible care.”

The Aurora System is designed to be located within the breast care center where it is readily available to specialized physicians and their patients. As a diagnostic imaging tool, the Aurora® 1.5T Dedicated Breast MRI System with 3-D Bilateral SpiralRODEO™ is ideal for a wide range of indications in breast disease management including, but not limited to:

  • Detecting or excluding the existence of cancer in high risk women
  • Characterizing indeterminate clinical or mammographically detected abnormalities
  • Determining the extent of cancer for treatment planning
  • Detecting occult cancer
  • Evaluating patients for residual disease following surgery
  • Monitoring cancer response and the extent of residual disease after neoadjuvant chemotherapy
  • Evaluating implant integrity and detecting cancer in women with breast augmentation
